If you’re self-employed, you’ve probably heard a lot of people speaking about Making Tax Digital.
From April, the way income is reported to HMRC is changing. Instead of submitting everything once a year, updates will be sent every three months using suitable software.
For many people, it sounds like a big change – but with the right setup it’s really not that bad.
At Numbers Speak, I help sole traders keep their records organised, their deadlines clear, and their bookkeeping simple.
If you’re unsure where to start, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
What is Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s new system for reporting business income.
From April 2026, it will apply to self-employed people and landlords earning over £50,000 per year, with the threshold expected to reduce to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028.
For those affected, it means:
• Keeping digital records of your business income and expenses
• Sending updates to HMRC every three months
• Submitting a final year-end declaration
The first reporting period begins in April, with the first deadline on 7th August.
